About Us

Artigiano Imports was founded in 2004 by me, Richard Klein. At the time I co-owned and ran Maria Pia’s Trattoria in Wellington. I began importing Italian wine for our restaurant, literally working as a garagista –out of my garage. Growth was organic. I began to distribute to selected clients, one of whom, Blair Fryer (formerly owner of Vivo Wine Bar, pictured here to my left) is now the company’s General Manager.  

What makes us different is that, unlike most New Zealand importers, we don’t buy out of distributors’ catalogues or through agents, but rather from individual wineries. We also don’t “play it safe” by importing the same Italian wines already available everywhere.
