Geografico Toscana IGT “La Pevera” 2018
In the early 1970’s, a wine called Sassicaia made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a noble estate in Bolgheri, Tuscany and aged in French barriques took the wine world by storm, giving birth to the term “Super Tuscan”. Prior to that, French oak was practically non-existent in Italy. How things have changed since then!
While opinions are many, varied and could fill volumes, the fact remains that the so-called “international varieties” of Cabernet and Syrah grow extremely well in Tuscany. They also blend wonderfully with Italy’s most native of all native grapes: Sangiovese. The result here is an elegant wine of tremendous appeal to lovers of fruit-driven opulence, ripeness and impressive length.
Pevera – Italian for an old-fashioned funnel made of oak used for filling barrels – delivers freshness and complexity with notes of ripe black fruit, figs, vanilla and warm spices and an impressive palate of dried fruit, spice and a hint of chocolate. A majestic wine at an equally impressive price-point to be enjoyed now or cellared for 10-20 more years.
