Abbazia di Novacella Gruner Veltliner 2022
Founded in 1154 by Augustine monks high up in the Val Isarco near the Austrian border, the Abbey at Novacella is most certainly Italy’s and quite possibly one of the world’s oldest active wineries. Given that the region was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire until WWII, it is no surprise that the Gruner Veltliner has its origins in Austria. A natural cross between Traminer (a.k.a. Savagnin) and an obscure local variety known as St. Georgener, Grüner Veltliner made a big splash in the USA in the early 2000s where it became known as Gru-Vee.
The variety is prized for its full-body, zingy citrus minerality and peppery, spicy notes. Grown between 650 – 750 metres above sea level on highly mineral soil, this superb expression is partly fermented in stainless steel and partly (25%) in 3000L neutral oak casks.
