Tenute Sella Nebbiolo Lessona DOC 2018

This  “Mountain Nebbiolo” comes from upper Piedmont and the Sesia river valley, home to a famed super volcano, that imploded some 50 million years ago, creating what is now one of the most important geological sites on earth. It is also home to 10 different denominations of Spanna, the local name for Nebbiolo, which has a documented history centuries older than that of Barolo.

While the soil types are highly diversified, they have the common characteristic of being very acidic (compared to those of the Langhe which are highly alkaline). This translates to a lighter, less tannic style of Nebbiolo.

The Lessona site has been cultivated by Tenuta Sella, (the oldest established winery of the area), since 1671.  It contains 15% of Vespolina, a local grape that adds a distinctive peppery note to this graceful wine, which ages for 24 months in 5,000 L bottiof Slavonian oak.

Grapes:

Nebbiolo 85%, Vespolina 15%
