Erste & Neue Pinot Noir Alto Adige DOC 2022
Pinot Noir from the mountainous region bordering on Austria. Notwithstanding the altitude, the area has a unique microclimate caused by the southerly wind known as the Ora. Coming off Lake Garda every afternoon, the warming wind streams up the river valley causing summer temperatures to be higher than those of Palermo!
Like many wines from this region, this one is made by a cooperative; actually two cooperatives! The ‘First’ (Erste) from 1900, amalgamated in 1986 with the ‘Newest’ (Neue) cooperative from 1925. A further merger in 2016 saw Erste + Neue join forces with Cantina Kaltern, making it one of the strongest producers in the South Tyrol or “Alto Adige” (the ‘Upper Adige’, referring to the eponymous river).
Aged 5 months in large format Slavonian oak barrels of up to 4,000 litres, this is a Pinot in the classic alpine style of minerality and freshness.
