Firriato "Santagostino" Baglio Soria Sicilia IGT 2018
Founded in 1980 and still owned by the Di Gaetano family, Firriato is one of Sicily’s pre-eminent private wineries. Named after a contrada (zone) near Trapani on the western coast of the island, Firriato is among the early protagonists of a “new era” of Sicilian wineries that focussed on quality rather than volume.
Their flagship wine, Santagostino, is a blend of Nero d’Avola and Syrah. The fruit comes from a single estate - Baglio Sorìa - at 200m a.s.l. The wine sees 8 months in American durmast oak barriques and a further 6 months in bottle before release. The nose is redolent of red fruit, woody spices, liquorice and tobacco. On the palate it displays structure, vivacity and an unmistakably Mediterranean character that has kept it a Sicilian and international icon for decades.
